Looking for something more 3-dimensional for your wall? Have a look at Helen Edwards new framed paper and textile pieces. Her works are stitched, folded, wooven and threaded to construct intricately detailed works of art. Very admirable and a pleasure to look at. On the left there are 3 new mosaics by Jude Freeman.

What’s in Store July

what's in sotre July 2013 3A few weeks have passed since the last ‘What’s in Store’. You have been keeping our artists busy with plenty of commissions. Next to bespoke orders we have also had plenty of new work delivered. Jan Brewerton, Lincoln Kirby-Bell and Kate Packer have been busy. Lincoln’s latest design includes a range of tableware and this wallplates with frogs. Kate has been busy making jewellery, including her popular bug brooches and wall pieces.

janie ramsey new workWe also have a new ceramic artist at 45 Southside Janie Ramsey. Watch this space for a post on her work in detail soon. Janie’s work is inspired by her time in Turkey as well as archaeology.

what's in sotre July 2013 2Coincidentally, one of the pewter wallpanels delivered by Melanie Guy recently is called Turkish Atmosphere. It is the smaller more colourful pewter panel underneath the larger panel. Also back with new work are Hamlin and Wright with their fused glass panels towards the back of the picture.

‘Paris’ is a rare Cityscape mosaic by Jude Freeman. Jenny Beavan and Jane Price have also created new work. Jane Price will also be part of our upcoming textile exhibition in the autumn. As usual you can see a taste of what we have in store in our online gallery.

Exotic Places and Italian Seas

Our current exhibition features Jude Freeman’s mosaics. Jude is a well established and highly sought after mosaic artist.

Mostly self-taught, she has developed a style that is totally unique. She uses Venetian glass smalti, ceramic, stone and marble, gold, silver and bronze leaf, mirror, pyrite, paua shell, vintage china and Japanese porcelain. She also paints and makes her own ceramic tiles. Each piece is individually cut to fit a specific place in the mosaic so no grout is used. This allows for a highly textural surface. She does not draw out the design but spends time selecting each piece, making decisions about composition and colour and cutting the exact shape required to fit its intended space. Always detailed, the work has great depth and quality.

Inspired by travel and colour, she often captures the essence of a place within her mosaics. In some this expression is purely abstract exploring colour, texture and line, while in others it manifests as a narrative Japanese scene or reconstructed land, sea or cityscape. She takes much inspiration from time spent in Italy; the colour and texture of its stone, the depth of turquoise in the Mediterranean and the extreme beauty of its cities.
