Robert Hills – Artist Statement

Robert Hills studied at Plymouth College of Art and Design from 1992 to 1996 and furthered his experience working as a blacksmith and fabricator for nine years at Dean Forge in Buckfastleigh. In 2006 he set up his own workshop in Plymouth where he could develop his passion for steel as an art form.

Inspired by objects that have been discarded, Rob sees through the superficial corrosion to the beauty of a form and the practical attributes, he combines old and new materials with a sensitive and intuitive approach. He is a talented artist-maker with an eye for detail, manifested by thoughtfully designed, high specification and well finished works of functional art with character and presence.

Robert has collaborated and built bespoke chandeliers for a designer that have been exhibited and sold world wide and continues to develop his own designs in the versatile and enduring medium of metal. All works are made only in small and limited quantities.
