Karen Carlyon – Artist Statement

Karen began to express her creative ideas by taking watercolour classes and later studying ceramics. She spent several years with ceramicist Paula Downing, hand building large sculptural pieces using various clay bodies.

In 2017 Karen began working as an apprentice for renowned potter Hugh West and soon created her own style. She now works exclusively in porcelain and fires in a gas kiln. She mixes her own glazes, taking inspiration from the coastline, watching the movement and colours of the sea. Her main production is tableware but she also makes small series’ of individual pieces.

Karen is still sharing the studio with Hugh West in rural Cornwall and selling her work through galleries mainly in the South West.
